This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to maintain stockpiles in the Extractive and Coal and Metalliferous mining.
This unit is appropriate for those working in operational or supervisory roles.
No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for maintain stockpiles | 1.1 Access, interpret and apply stockpiling operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant 1.2 Obtain, interpret and clarify work requirements 1.3 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete the allocated work 1.4 Carry out worksite inspection and rectify or report hazards and/or other notifiable conditions 1.5 Communicate with other personnel using approved communication methods 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment 1.7 Identify, address and report environmental issues 1.8 Confirm stockpile boundaries and signage are erected 1.9 Access and apply safety information and procedures throughout the work, and ensure safety of personnel, plant and equipment |
2. Maintain stockpile | 2.1 Maintain battering angle of stockpile 2.2 Visually inspect stockpile structure and surrounding area to assess the safety and progress of stockpile formation 2.3 Dump and move stockpile material using appropriate techniques to form stockpile battering angle and prevent slumping 2.4 Inform appropriate personnel of spillage and take appropriate measures to manage and/or remove spill 2.5 Remove and dispose of contaminants from stockpile upon identification 2.6 Turn stockpile material utilising appropriate equipment and techniques |
3. Suppress dust | 3.1 Maintain stockpile structure to prevent dust creation and unwanted material movement 3.2 Adjust stockpiling activities due to weather conditions and dust suppression policy |
4. Maintain stockpile access roads and bunds | 4.1 Maintain stockpile access roads 4.2 Maintain safety and condition of bunds 4.3 Maintain stockpile access roads free from spillages and obstructions, and ensure equipment movement to and from stockpiles is not restricted |
5. Carry out post-operational procedures | 5.1 Inspect, fault find and report equipment faults 5.2 Carry out operational maintenance, servicing, lubricating and housekeeping tasks 5.3 Visually inspect structures and components for fault conditions, wear and need of repair or replacement 5.4 Process written records and reports |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
works effectively with others to undertake and effective maintenance of stockpiles to meet all required outcomes including:
preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements
communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones
demonstrates completion of the maintenance of stockpiles that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
confirming and implementing barriers and signage
carrying out inspection of the stockpiles and surrounding areas
dumping and moving stockpile materials
removing and dispose of contaminants
maintaining stockpile structure and battering angle
conducting basic operational maintenance including servicing, lubrication and cleaning
processing written records and reports
Evidence of Knowledge
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of maintaining stockpiles through:
site environmental requirements and constraints
relevant equipment characteristics, technical capability and limitations
indicator readings
principles of contamination
stockpile management processes
bund construction, drainage and stockpile maintenance procedures
wet and dry working procedures
environmental principles
isolation procedures principles
stockpiling characteristics and limitations
Assessment Conditions
An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
