UNIT DESCRIPTOR:This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to monitor compliance with international and Australian legislative requirements and measures to ensure the protection of the marine environment, including coordination of preventative and precautionary procedures, observing compliance, remedying non-compliance and maintaining relevant certification.

Application

The unit covers requirements for the monitoring of compliance with legislative requirements and measures to ensure protection of the environment on an ocean-going commercial vessel and has applications in qualifications for Master 3, Master (Less than 500GT) and Master (Unlimited), i.e. Diploma Transport&Distribution(Coastal Maritime Operations - Master Class 3), Diploma Transport&Distribution(Maritime Operations - Deck Watchkeeper) and Advanced Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Maritime Operations - Master Unlimited) and Chief Engineers, i.e. Advanced Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Marine Engineering Class 1), Advanced Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Marine Engineering Class 2) and Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Coastal Marine Engineering - Engineer Class 3)

Assessment of competency must comply with the assessment requirements of the relevant maritime regulations

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken within relevant marine authority approved and audited arrangements by a registered training organisation:

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral examinations, and

Appropriate practical assessment must occur:

i

at the registered training organisation; and/or

ii

on an appropriate working or training vessel
