Application
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to and rectify rail traffic autonomous equipment for operation. This includes identifying repair requirements, conducting minor repairs, checking and reporting minor repairs. This unit defines rail traffic as a train. Work must be carried out in accordance with organisational procedures and regulations, and safe working codes of practice relevant to fault diagnosis and rectification. Work involves the application of routine minor fault diagnosis and rectification procedures when maintaining the safety and operation of an autonomous rail traffic and rolling stock across a variety of operational rail transport contexts. People achieving competence in this unit will need to fulfil the applicable state/territory legislated rail safety requirements and to comply with relevant codes of practice and/or guidelines. |
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.
Autonomous rail traffic location and possible fault cause are determined
Hazards are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented
Operational capability of autonomous rail traffic equipment is evaluated
Autonomous rail traffic and equipment are made safe for inspection
Faulty or damaged components or equipment are identified, visually inspected and assessed
Impact of faults on autonomous rail traffic is identified and safe operating capabilities are evaluated
Minor repairs and/or isolations are carried out in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
Equipment, tools and required materials are operated, applied and handled in accordance with work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and manufacturer specifications to prevent injury and damage
Factors that impact on safe rail traffic operations are continuously monitored
Situational awareness is applied through effective visual scans, use of communication systems, use of rail traffic information and use of systems of safeworking in accordance with workplace procedures
Minor repairs and/or isolations are checked for safety compliance
Equipment is checked to ensure it conforms to manufacturer specifications and required standards
Action taken is reported/recorded in accordance with workplace procedures
Autonomous rail traffic systems capabilities are monitored and continually evaluated
Communication is maintained with relevant personnel and clarification is sought about anything that is not clear in relation to processes and procedures
Autonomous rail traffic is returned to operations in accordance with workplace procedures
Autonomous rail traffic is visually inspected on departure in accordance with workplace procedures |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include: accessing the human machine interface and obtain information accessing the rail danger zone safely in accordance with network safety management system confirming it is safe to board the rail traffic following instructions to attempt fault rectification identifying the communication status of rail traffic making decisions based on evaluation of faults, defects, deficiencies and operational capabilities reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, manufacturer's information and safety signs receiving notification to attend location of rail traffic setting external switches to disengage the autonomous systems unlocking and accessing rail traffic. |
Evidence of Knowledge
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: emergency response procedures isolation systems operational requirement of autonomous rail traffic relevant autonomous rail traffic workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications relevant network safety management system relevant safety, work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures and regulations tools and equipment required for the task and the procedures and precautions for their care, use and storage typical minor repair problems that can occur, and appropriate remedial action that should be taken workplace documentation and recording requirements. |
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment. Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment Assessment must occur in rail workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate rail workplace conditions. Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate. Resources for assessment must include: a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations relevant and appropriate materials, tools, autonomous equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry applicable documentation, including legislation, regulations, codes of practice, workplace procedures and operation manuals. |
