This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to ride a courier/delivery motorcycle while safely carrying loads, in accordance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority regulations/permit requirements for riding a motorcycle on public roads.

It includes making motorcycle pre-operational checks; systematically, safely and efficiently controlling all functions; and effectively managing hazardous situations.

Driving involves the application of routine procedures to pick up and deliver products, documents and materials from and to customers across a variety of operational contexts.

Work is generally performed with limited supervision, and with duty of care responsibility for self in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

Ride courier motorcycle

1.1

Motorcycle is started, steered, manoeuvred, positioned and stopped in accordance with traffic regulations, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures

Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency and performance and to minimise engine and gear damage

Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated, and avoided or controlled through defensive driving

Motorcycle is parked, shut down and secured in accordance with manufacturer specifications, traffic regulations and workplace procedures

Motorcycles carrying dangerous goods are driven along designated routes in accordance with current Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code, relevant government regulations and workplace policies and procedures

Load is checked to confirm accordance with motorcycle load limit

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures

completing relevant documentation

demonstrating low-risk riding behaviours

monitoring performance of motorcycle and taking appropriate action

reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

factors that may cause traffic delays and diversions and related action that can be taken

map reading and road navigation techniques

motorcycle handling procedures

motorcycling hazards and related defensive riding techniques

pre-operational checks carried out on motorcycle and related action

procedures and policies for identifying, accepting and carrying dangerous/hazardous goods

relevant state/territory road traffic authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements

relevant WHS/OHS and environmental procedures and regulations

workplace operational instructions.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Practical riding aspects must be assessed on a motorcycle suitable for courier-delivery work as currently used in industry.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
