This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake pilot or escort activities in the movement of oversized and/or overmassed loads.

Work must be carried out in accordance with National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) regulations for piloting and escorting oversized and overmassed loads, and relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority licence/permit requirements.

It includes preparing for pilot/escort operation, carrying out communications regarding pilot/escort operation, and fulfilling all functions related to piloting and escorting vehicles carrying oversized and overmassed loads.

Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision, and with limited accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

Prepare for pilot or escort operation

Job hazards are identified and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

Maintenance needs of pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are identified in accordance with maintenance schedule or fault reports

Required vehicle positioning, traffic warning and directional signalling procedures are implemented to enable safe passage of load

Safety equipment is operated and roadside obstacles are positioned to ensure safe passage of load in accordance with government rules and regulations, and workplace procedures

Precautions are taken to ensure convoy personnel are aware of road and other conditions that may impact on load and vehicle security

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.
