This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and transport a load while operating a car carrier vehicle.

It includes preparing for a trip, loading car carrier vehicle, transporting load and unloading car carrier vehicle.

Work must be carried out in accordance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority licence requirements and regulations for heavy vehicles.

Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision, and with duty of care responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

Load car carrier vehicle

2.1

Car carrier vehicle is loaded without damage to vehicles, in the correct order and in accordance with organisational requirements

Vehicles are loaded onto car carrier vehicle in accordance with regulatory requirements, and organisational safety and operating procedures, and adjustments are made as required when loading commercial vehicles

Vehicles are parked in gear and brakes are applied

Load is secured with correct tie down methods for transporting vehicles in accordance with organisational requirements

Checks are made to ensure loaded car carrier complies with legal requirements for height, weight, width and axle loading

Driving techniques are used, when operating car carrier, to minimise risk of damage to loaded vehicles in accordance with eco-driving considerations

Identity of persons taking delivery of vehicles is confirmed in accordance with delivery instructions

Vehicle unloading procedures are followed in accordance with organisational and customer requirements for safety, and in a manner that minimises inconvenience to other road users

Unloaded vehicles are inspected and documentation of their condition is completed

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

checking and replenishing fluids and carrying out lubrication processes

communicating effectively with others

identifying requirements for accepting correct vehicle for cartage

interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work

loading vehicles to ensure:

overhang does not exceed 1.2 meters at front or rear of vehicle

they do not touch each other during transit

they are loaded in reverse sequence of planned unloading sequence

adjustments are made when loading commercial vehicles

making accurate estimates in a range of situations

monitoring and anticipating traffic hazards and taking appropriate action

monitoring performance of vehicle, its trailers and its equipment and taking appropriate action as required

operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures

reading and interpreting relevant procedures, information and signs

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards

servicing vehicle and its equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and standard operating procedures

working collaboratively with others

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Practical assessment must be undertaken in a vehicle typical of that used in industry.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, national Load Restraint Guide (LRG), codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.

A simulator is not suitable for final assessment of this unit of competency.
