Operate a rear loading mobile compaction/collection vehicle


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate a rear loading mobile compaction/collection vehicle (the ‘vehicle’).

It includes following safety requirements, loading product onto vehicle, compacting product on vehicle, unloading product from vehicle and completing documentation.

Vehicle must be operated in compliance with relevant state/territory and traffic authority vehicle licence requirements and regulations.

Vehicle is operated with limited or no supervision, with accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Follow safety requirements

Operator and third party safety is maintained in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Vehicle controls are checked and operated in accordance with organisational, manufacturer requirements

Vehicle cleaning and non-technical maintenance is undertaken in accordance with organisational and manufacturer requirements

Load product onto vehicle

2.1

Vehicle is made ready to operate in accordance with organisational and manufacturer requirements

Product streams to be collected are identified

Documentation provided is used to determine locations to collect product

Product is deposited into vehicle collection area (hopper) in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Blockages are cleared and non-compliant product is reported in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Prior to travel, product is removed from ground and no product is left on lifting equipment, vehicle or vehicle body

Compact product in vehicle

3.1

Loading of product within the body of the vehicle is monitored

Compaction equipment is operated in accordance with organisational and manufacturer requirements

Once vehicle reaches gross vehicle mass (GVM) compaction/loading is ceased in accordance with relevant organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Unload product from vehicle and complete relevant documentation

Vehicle is positioned on level, stable ground to ensure vehicle safety and stability when unloading

Vehicle is positioned to allow unloading, in accordance with site, organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Unloading equipment is operated in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Return of equipment used to transit position is ensured

4.5

Documentation for unloaded product is completed in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying appropriate techniques for loading and unloading vehicle

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

identifying, loading and transporting product streams in accordance with organisational, manufacturer and legislative requirements

interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work

monitoring and anticipating traffic hazards and taking appropriate action

monitoring performance of vehicle and equipment, and taking appropriate action as required

operating a rear loading mobile compaction-collection vehicle across three different workplace job functions

operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures

operating vehicle cabin functions correctly

positioning product containers/bins manually

reading, interpreting and following instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to the vehicle

using correct manual handling techniques when operating vehicle and/or product containers

working collaboratively with others.


Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

customer requirements when picking up product or delivering product to a product collection facility

factors involved in trip preparation

relevant legislation, and organisational and manufacturer procedures for transporting product in vehicle

relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority road rules, regulations, permits and licence requirements

safe pick-up and delivery of product to and from site

vehicle loading and unloading procedures

workplace documentation

workplace driving and operational instructions.


Assessment Conditions

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment include:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.

Use of a simulator is not suitable for final assessment of this unit of competency.
