Plan cutting/joining process

Process and materials to be used are identified

Manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures for cutting/joining task are read and followed in the planning process

Safety precautions for self, equipment and work areas appropriate for tasks are identified

Work sequence is planned, noting appropriate curing/cooling times, efficient work sequence and quality specification requirements

Allowances for wastage and/or joining overlaps are checked in workplace documentation and manufacturer instructions

Undertake cutting/joining process

Equipment and consumables are assembled

Equipment and site are checked for safety

Adjustments and settings are made to suit materials, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures

Materials to be cut or joined are positioned and secured

Cutting/joining process is undertaken in accordance with selected method of operation

Finished materials are checked for conformity to quality/workplace standards

Faults/problems with materials or componentry are identified and action is undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures

Complete cutting/joining process

Finished materials are directed to storage area or next production stage

Waste materials are directed for disposal or recovery

Equipment is maintained and stored in designated area

Workplace documentation and records are completed as required

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

adapting to differences in materials and equipment in accordance with operating procedures

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures

communicating and working effectively with others

identifying, selecting and using relevant materials and equipment efficiently and effectively

modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule

planning own work, predicting consequences and identifying improvements

reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs

reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards

working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

documentation and record requirements

equipment used for cutting and joining materials as part of pallet production and the precautions and procedures that should be followed in its use

housekeeping standards and procedures

operational work systems, equipment, management and site operating systems for cutting and joining materials as part of pallet production

problems that may occur and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems

regulations relevant to cutting and joining materials as part of pallet production including requirements of relevant Australian Standards

relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines

site layout and obstacles

workplace procedures and policies for cutting and joining materials as part of pallet production.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment include:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.
