Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also prepare waste products for reuse to meet requirements for two different clients.

While preparing the waste products for reuse, the person must:

assess waste products to ensure quality compliance with client requirements

calculate fees and charge clients for waste products

identify waste products which are capable of reuse

follow organisational procedures and comply with regulatory and legal requirements to:

dispose of unclaimed products within designated holding periods

identify and report hazards and risks in the work area

protect the environment

record and report information about reusable waste products

select, check and use personal protective equipment (PPE)

work safely with hazardous substances and dangerous goods

notify clients of the availability of reusable waste products

store and monitor reusable waste products to provide accessibility, maintain quality and prevent contamination

identify waste types and waste characteristics including hazardous and dangerous waste, non-conforming waste and reusable or recyclable waste.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

methods of checking the integrity of waste containment, including checks for:

contamination

drum expansion

gases

leaching

leaks

seals

spillage

unstable form

resource recovery options

signs of waste product contamination, including:

infestation

mixing with other waste types

rot or mould

waterlogging

types, streams and characteristics of waste including hazardous and dangerous waste and non-conforming waste streams

types of waste products that may be reused or recycled, including:

products that may be reconditioned and adapted to a new use or function

reusable useful substances found in waste

useful materials from garbage or waste

waste products that can be reprocessed.

Range Statement
