Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

CUACAM404 - Pull focus

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare to pull focus

  1. Liaise with production personnel and interpret and confirm focus requirements for shots
  2. Discuss with relevant personnel use of equipment, accessories and techniques to achieve creative outcomes required of shots
  3. Mount equipment according to specifications and requirements of production personnel

Pull focus during productions

  1. Liaise with relevant production personnel throughout shoots
  2. Check equipment calibration and adjust as necessary
  3. Minimise movements to camera while pulling focus
  4. Operate follow focus unit to predetermined points, within required timing of shots
  5. Estimate and execute necessary adjustments to predetermined focus points to achieve required image
  6. Provide feedback to relevant production personnel on completion of shots, noting problems that may need to be resolved
  7. Relay information to continuity according to enterprise procedures

Evidence of the ability to:

discuss methods of achieving creative effects required of shots

calculate and mark focus points

keep camera steady while pulling focus

pull focus on a range of camera equipment and accessories to achieve required shots, liaising with personnel throughout the shoot.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of key film and television crew members

identify typical problems that may arise in the context of pulling focus and briefly describe solutions

explain focus features of a range of cameras and accessories

explain how focus can be affected by the use of different accessories and techniques

outline work health and safety procedures that apply to pulling focus.
