Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

CUAPRP201 - Develop basic prop construction skills

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for prop construction

  1. Liaise with supervisor to determine the nature of props to be constructed
  2. Select materials for prop construction according to instructions and intended use of prop items
  3. Calculate correct quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
  4. Select equipment and tools according to materials being used and type of props being constructed

Finalise prop construction

  1. Identify problems with prop construction promptly and take action within scope of own responsibility or report to supervisor
  2. Seek feedback on own construction techniques and note ways to improve own work performance
  3. Contribute to evaluations of prop construction processes

Evidence of the ability to:

use basic techniques, materials and equipment to construct simple props for at least one production

follow safety procedures

work cooperatively with others.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must describe:

properties and applications of materials commonly used for prop construction

types of tools and techniques commonly used for prop construction

safety and environmental issues associated with the use of tools, materials and adhesives

link between the intended use of a prop and the selection of materials and construction method.
