Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the ability to:

apply safe work practices when using specialised finishing materials, tools and equipment

produce finished works that are technically sound and free from faults arising from the finishing process

operate tools and equipment independently

apply knowledge of specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories relevant to the material being finished.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure access to:

a safe work space for specialised finishing processes.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

evaluation of work produced by the candidate in terms of its technical and aesthetic resolution

evaluation of the work documentation

direct observation of work in progress

written and/or oral questioning and discussion to assess knowledge and understanding and candidate’s intentions and work outcome

review of portfolios of evidence

review of third-party reports from experienced practitioners.

Assessment methods should closely reflect work place demands (e.g. literacy) and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).

Guidance information for assessment

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended, for example:

CUVPRP503A Present a body of own creative work.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Required skills

communication skills to liaise with others about specialised finishing processes and challenges

critical thinking and analytical skills to:

evaluate the needs of particular work projects to establish required materials, tools and equipment

research and evaluate historical and contemporary trends

literacy skills to read technical data sheets, and tool and equipment manuals

problem-solving skills to identify and resolve technical issues

numeracy skills to estimate costs for specialised finishing processes

self-management, planning and organising skills to:

evaluate needs of own practice in relation to specialised finishing

set up a specialised finishing work space

carry out specialised finishing projects

technology skills to safely use specialised finishing materials, tools and equipment.

Required knowledge

historical, contemporary and emerging trends in specialised finishing

properties of and specifications for different specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories

typical problems that occur in the specialised finishing process and how they may be resolved in the context of relevant materials and art forms

characteristics of different materials when finished and the potential of these characteristics to achieve different effects

cost and supply parameters for specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories in the context of professional practice

sustainability issues associated with the materials, tools, equipment and accessories used in specialised finishing

intellectual property issues and legislation associated with creative work

types of technical and other data that may need to be stored for safety and other reasons

organisational and legislative OHS procedures in relation to specialised finishing.
