Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

DEFCA001B - Observe and monitor hostile areas to detect targets

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Occupy and prepare a location

  1. An appropriate vantage point is occupied and concealment is maintained throughout the operation.
  2. Occupied position is established.
  3. Reference points are established and information is documented.
  4. Possible threats are observed and monitored so an appropriate plan of action can be prepared.

Detect target/s

  1. Target position is established via aural and visual observation, and bearing and distance are estimated
  2. Threat (if present) is identified and classified through visual or aural recognition, or by crater analysis.
  3. Enemy capability is estimated.
  4. Hostile action is monitored from prepared position.
  5. Communications with stakeholders is maintained so that relevant information can be provided.

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

The evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria of this unit and confirm the ability to correctly:

occupy and establish a vantage point / observation post

observe and monitor a selected area

identify a threat through visual or aural means

communicate information quickly, clearly and accurately

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations in at least two different target locations from at least one observation site.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed on operations or in a simulated operational environment.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to an appropriate area and a range of threat equipment listed in the Range Statement.
