Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

DEFCA416C - Employ hand operated pyrotechnics

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Handle pyrotechnics

  1. Pyrotechnics are identified and selected according to operational requirements.
  2. Pyrotechnics are safely handled and carried in accordance with standard procedures.
  3. Operating positions are adopted as required by circumstances and type of pyrotechnic.
  4. Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation.
  5. Environmental factors are monitored to ensure safety.

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to safely employ pyrotechnics for illumination, signalling and obscuration.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in an actual or simulated workplace environment by observing the use of hand operated pyrotechnics during the day and at night.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to pyrotechnics.
