Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Develop trials approach

  1. Trial requirements are identified, analysed and details are confirmed if necessary by follow-up consultation
  2. Trial methodologies and procedures are identified, analysed and selected in accordance with procedures
  3. Trial evaluation procedures are identified, analysed and selected in accordance with procedures

Plan for trials

  1. Information on resource requirements and availability are obtained or confirmed in accordance with procedures
  2. Information support systems for the trial, including achievable reporting and recording processes are planned in accordance with the identified requirements
  3. Coordination issues are negotiated and resolved with others
  4. Work health and safety (WHS) principles and requirements are identified and observed throughout the trial process and are incorporated in the plan

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

identify and select trial methodologies and procedures and trial evaluation procedures where these are not provided

plan the trial

analyse trial outcomes

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated in a range of actual or simulated trials contexts.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or under conditions which accurately simulate a realistic workplace.

Specific resources for assessment

Access is required to:

facilities and resources used in conducting trials in a research environment

Method of assessment

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

direct observation

interviewing the candidate

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions

Required Skills and Knowledge

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

Required Skills

allocate resources

apply organisational WHS requirements

apply organisational safety policies and structures

assess risks

communicate clearly and effectively

conduct planning

coordinate activities

evaluate information

write reports

Required Knowledge

evaluation processes

organisational WHS requirements

organisational safety policies and structures

planning processes

reporting procedures

resource allocation procedures

resource requirements

risk assessment

trialling methodologies

Range Statement

The Range Statement relates to the Unit of Competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording in the Performance Criteria is detailed below.

Trials may include:

Environmental testing

Organisational trials

Proof testing

Research group or divisional trials

Specific field testing which is not a normal component of laboratory testing

Methodologies and procedures may include:

Those established by:

organisation

research group

divisions

Or may be specified by the client

Resources may include:

Budgets

Materials

Personnel

Time

Information support systems may include:

Computerised systems

Manual systems

A clear and comprehensive format may include:

Development of new procedures for future activities

Recommendations that can be easily understood

Solutions to problems that were faced in the planning
