Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

plan the explosive ordnance task

apply the appropriate OH&S requirements and safety precautions

identify requirements and resources

monitor the performance of the task

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated in a range of actual or simulated military explosive ordnance task contexts.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or in a simulated work environment, in accordance with all relevant legislation and Defence requirements.

Specific resources for assessment

Access is required to:

explosive ordnance

operational setting

Method of assessment

This unit may be assessed with the following unit:

DEFEO101D Work safely with explosive ordnance.

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

direct observation

interviewing the candidate

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions

Required Skills and Knowledge

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

Required Skills

allocate appropriate materials and personnel to the task

direct, brief, coordinate and monitor personnel

efficiently and safely supervise the task to achieve the objective

interpret orders, instructions and directions

plan the task

provide reports and appropriate documentation

supervise personnel

Required Knowledge

activities in the explosive ordnance task to be performed

characteristics, technical capabilities, effects, employment and limitations of relevant explosive ordnance

command and control procedures

material requirements

WHS requirements

personnel skill requirements for each activity within the task

procedures and requirements in the performance of the task

reporting requirements and procedures associated with the task

safety precautions associated with the task

use of tools, equipment and materials involved in the task

Range Statement

The Range Statement relates to the Unit of Competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording in the Performance Criteria is detailed below.
