Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

DEFMIL097 - Operate an inland modular raft or ferry

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for raft or ferry operation

  1. Determine task, cargo, destination and route from operating instructions.
  2. Compile navigation data.
  3. Check cargo weight is within the safe operating limit of the craft and complete manifests to ensure passengers and cargo are safe to move.
  4. Conduct launch site survey, risk and environmental assessment.
  5. Determine suitable raft or ferry design.
  6. Develop assembly and disassembly plan in accordance with design, resources, surveys, risks and environmental considerations.
  7. Select equipment and check for serviceability, replace or reject, and report unserviceable items.
  8. Check operator and crew conform to relevant state/territory and federal licensing requirements.
  9. Refer problems that cannot be resolved locally to higher authority for resolution.
  10. Brief crew.
  11. Liaise with outside agencies as required.
  12. Conduct shore preparation and prepare the pontoons and tugs for launch.
