Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational and quality procedures for testing the strength of joints

safely and efficiently collect samples

accurately interpret test results

identify problems that may affect test results

complete accurate records and reports.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

joint strength and issues that may affect joint strength

different types of joints: glued joints, joints formed with nail plates

methods and procedures for testing joints: bending test, wet or dry cleavage chisel test, bloc shear test, nail plate pull out test

problems associated with the testing process: test accuracy; sample quality; faulty material; defects

criteria for recycling and re-using faulty material
