Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment

• prepared the clinic for at least 4 different dental prosthetic procedures including:

- locating each patient’s required laboratory work and necessary charts and records

- selecting and preparing instruments and equipment as required for specific procedures

- preparing relevant materials and medicaments for treatment

- maintaining and storing equipment correctly and in good working order

• consistently applied standard and additional precautions during preparation for 4 different prosthetic procedures including:

- using personal protective equipment

- using clean and sterile techniques where appropriate

- maintaining and storing equipment correctly and in good working order.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• Australian/New Zealand Standards, workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control, Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, and organisation policies relating to dental laboratory work including:

- personal hygiene practices especially washing and drying hands before and after patient contact

- appropriate reprocessing and storage of reusable instruments

- aseptic technique

- safe handling and disposal of sharps and other clinical waste

- surface cleaning and management of blood and body fluid spills

- techniques to limit contamination

- decontamination of completed laboratory work

- personal protective equipment and their use according to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards

- dental practice or organisation policy and procedures, including registration standards and guidelines

- factors influencing medical and dental emergencies and the appropriate response.
