Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks:

• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment

• prepared at least 4 patients for dental prosthesis try-in

• followed procedures to ensure 4 patient’s safety during try-in

• assessed functional and aesthetic acceptability of 4 trial sets of dentures, including:

- 2 complete maxillary and mandibular dentures

- and any 4 dentures of the following, 2 of which must be partial dentures:

o complete maxillary or mandibular denture opposing partial maxillary or mandibular denture

o opposing partial maxillary and mandibular dentures

o partial maxillary or mandibular denture opposing natural dentition.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

rationale and objectives for try-ins

functional and aesthetic acceptability of dentures, for both operators and patients

ethical principles and legal responsibilities involved in the provision of dental care

dental practice or organisation policy and procedures, including registration standards and guidelines.
