Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

provided assistance in testing the quality of 2 water supply samples, including:

following workplace health and safety (WHS) and personal protective equipment requirements

reporting and following up findings

identified at least 2 potential water supply contaminants and followed correct procedures to address and follow up concern.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

legal and organisation requirements relating to monitoring the quality and safety of water supply to the community, including:

national, State/Territory and local health policies, goals, targets and priorities

processes used by key people and outside agencies to sample and treat water supply in the community and/or outstations

organisation standards, policies and procedures, including WHS and requirements for personal protective equipment

roles and responsibilities of self, key people and agencies

points of contact to assist with the implementation of strategies which are outside own area of responsibility

sources of water in the community and how the community accesses its water supply

environmental health issues in relation to water supply

water uses and quality guidelines

water sampling techniques and treatment and disinfection processes

how to interpret water testing results

the signs and indicators of possible contaminants

strategies to maintain water quality.
