Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

ICPCBF395 - Set up and operate folder gluer machine

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Set up and adjust units

  1. All details required for the job are checked and confirmed against job specifications
  2. Correct materials are checked and available for the job
  3. Adhesives appropriate for the substrate, application process and machine are selected
  4. Work area is made safe and ready for production according to safety requirements
  5. Folding guides and pressing plates are set to required dimensions for the job
  6. Feeder, folding part, gluer, stacker, belts, vacuums and glue applicators are clean, clear and ready for use

Monitor throughput

  1. Machine is run at speed required to produce a quality product
  2. Machine is jogged to ensure folds and glue are in correct position
  3. Guide positions are monitored to ensure adhesive is applied evenly and in correct position
  4. Paper moisture is monitored and correct moisture levels are maintained
  5. Blank spacing is controlled and product spacing and flow are maintained for efficient operation
  6. Folds are correctly placed and the product stacks correctly

Confirm quality of output

  1. A sample from the machine is selected and checked to ensure it conforms to required quality standards
  2. Adjustments are made when standards are not met
  3. Each process is monitored and minor adjustments are made during production, if required
  4. Samples are continuously monitored for defects, and defects are removed
  5. Efficiency, quality and output rate of production run are monitored for problems, and any deficiencies resolved
  6. Wastage is monitored, kept to a minimum and correctly disposed of according to enterprise quality standards
  7. Locations of all emergency shutdown buttons and triggers are known

Evidence of the ability to:

correctly set up and operate a folder gluer machine according to job specifications, performance criteria, and within the production timeframe with minimum downtime or wastage.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

list common faults associated with folder gluer machines, the causes, and corrective measures

describe correct procedures for set-up according to health and safety and workplace requirements

explain types of adhesive used and why they are chosen.
