Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare, set up and use an electronic engraving system to produce BOTH stylus and laser gravure cylinders, according to job specifications, and ensuring the cylinder is correctly etched to ensure quality reproduction, and meets print requirements

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources

transfer underlying skills of cylinder making across the pre-press sector (it is important the substrate for reproduction is identified and the quality of the cylinder is suitable for the identified printing processes).

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline work health and safety (WHS) concerns when engraving cylinders

state production parameters that should exist on the job ticket

calculate a change in screen angle

identify screen line ratio for fine rulings

describe specific features of the laser engraving process

explain how the cutting stylus can affect print quality

outline characteristics of the diamond stylus used for colour work

explain techniques of deleting errors on the finished cylinder

identify manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and information included in them.
