Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, and must be able to provide evidence that they can:

complete inspections on pulp and paper manufacturing equipment, at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals, including:

belt fatigue

gear backlash

stretch and slack in chains

sprocket wear

gear box noise and heat

damaged equipment or components

control panel indicators

electronic control indicators

air and oil pressure gauges

flow levels

pressure checks

complete basic non-specialist repairs and maintenance for pulp and paper manufacturing equipment, at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals, in line with manufacturers’ recommendations including:

cleaning

oil top ups

blade changes

filter changes or cleaning

greasing

lubricating

pressure checks

removing and replacing machinery components

maintaining or replacing consumables

tightening, tensioning and adjusting machinery components

after all inspection, repair and maintenance activities, complete accurate basic records of equipment faults, repair and maintenance actions.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

purpose, features and operation of a range of pulp and paper manufacturing equipment, at a level of understanding, to determine repair and maintenance requirements

consequences of inadequate preventative maintenance

methods used to test equipment and diagnose faults

use of instrumentation data as an indication of plant and equipment requiring preventative maintenance

basic non-specialist repair and maintenance techniques for pulp and paper manufacturing equipment to complete:

oil top ups

blade changes

filter changes or cleaning

greasing

lubricating

pressure checks

removing and replacing machinery components

maintaining or replacing consumables

safe handling and disposal of lubricants

organisational procedures:

standard operating procedures specific to inspecting, repairing and maintaining equipment

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting equipment faults, repair and maintenance actions.
