Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of APGS operations including:

accessing, interpreting and applying documentation for sealing concrete pavements

identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

works effectively with others to undertake and complete APGS that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

demonstrates completion of the use of automated paving guidance systems that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

setting up automated paving guidance system as per project specifications

operating automated paving guidance system

conducting shutdown operations

cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing total stations as per worksite requirements and manufacturer’s instructions

the conduct of APGS operations are to cover as a minimum:

setup, calibrate and pave for two hundred (200) meters within required conformance

Two (2) times vertical (one (1) positive, one (1) negative)

Two (2) times combination of above

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in using automated paving guidance systems through:
