Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

ability to select, prepare, use, maintain and clean the required tools and equipment according to supervisor instructions, workplace policies and procedures, and manufacturer's instructions

the safe and efficient production of vault lids according to work specifications

manufacturing vault lids on multiple occasions to ensure consistency of performance and ability to respond to different situations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

demonstration of skills for the manufacture of a range of vault lids using moulds

access to personal protective equipment and concreting tools and equipment used in the manufacture of vault lids

access to relevant documentation, such as vault lid specifications.

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of candidate planning work, preparing and applying tools and products to create required vault lids, and applying finishing and clean up procedures

written or verbal questioning to assess knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and workplace policies and procedures with regard to manufacturing vault lids

review of workplace documents completed by candidate

review of portfolios of evidence and third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Employability skills embedded in this unit should be assessed holistically with other relevant units that make up the skill set or qualification and in the context of the job role.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Required skills

safe concrete construction techniques, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment

communication skills, including clear and direct communication to establish work requirements and report equipment faults or defects

literacy and numeracy skills to identify and interpret work requirements, interpret and complete written documentation, follow plans and drawings, make measurements and perform calculations

organisational and self-management skills to complete required tasks according to customer requirements and workplace policies and procedures

problem-solving skills to identify and solve problems.
