Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, the range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

applies pharmacy protocols and procedures when selling wound care-related medicines, aids and equipment, including:

collecting the required information from customers

identifying situations or requests requiring referral to a pharmacist and refer appropriately

identifying and supplying the relevant medicines, information, aids and equipment to meet customer needs

demonstrating use of aids and equipment

applies knowledge of the common wound types and associated care requirements

applies knowledge of medicine, aids and equipment appropriate to assist wound healing

applies knowledge of healing approaches and stages

applies knowledge of lifestyle, self-care practices and support services

identifies and refers to specialist sources of information, advice and expertise to assist the customer and maintain currency of knowledge

respects and protects customer privacy when communicating with customers

demonstrates ability to put the customer at ease and use questioning techniques appropriate to discussing highly sensitive issues

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of the candidate in the workplace selling wound care-related medicines, aids and equipment to a range of customers

written or verbal questioning to assess knowledge and understanding

role plays to confirm communication skills to meet diverse customer requirements.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Employability skills are integral to effective performance in the workplace and are broadly consistent across industry sectors. How these skills are applied varies between occupations and qualifications due to the different work functions and contexts.

product and wound care terminology

sources of information, advice and specialist services related to wound care

role boundaries and responsibilities and circumstances under which referral to a pharmacist or other pharmacy staff is required

communication skills to collect and provide information to customers, including use of structured and open-ended questions and interpretation of non-verbal cues

procedures to follow for collecting and supplying information to an agent acting on behalf of a customer

communication methods and systems to operate as part of a team and provide relevant information to a pharmacist and other pharmacy staff as required.

Wound types may include:

acute wounds are caused by cuts, lacerations, abrasions, grazes

contusion, bruising and soft tissue injury are caused by blunt blow, punch, knock or fall

penetrating wounds (puncture) are caused by sharp objects

surgical wounds

bites and stings

burns and scalds

chronic wounds, e.g. from poor circulation or medical conditions.

Sources of information, specialist services and practitioners may include:

health care information

pharmacy or supplier product leaflets, brochures and manuals

other health care specialists

relevant websites.

Sale of wound care medicationsand aids and equipment must comply with:

federal and state or territory legislation

industry codes of practice, standards and guidelines

community pharmacy policies, protocols and procedures relating to the sale of wound care-related medicines and products.

Wound care aids and equipment may include:

wound dressings, e.g. spray-on dressings, gels, granules, pastes and beads, dry dressings, adhesive dressings and medicated bandages

strapping, bandaging, sports tape

anti-inflammatory medicines

antiseptic and saline washes

cold and hot packs

skin care products, such as skin cleansers, moisturisers, sealants and adhesive removers

surgical sundries.

Other medications may include:
