Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

SITTVAF303 - Tow and site recreational vehicles

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for towing of recreational vehicle.

  1. Identify and confirm the required site for the recreational vehicle.
  2. Calculate the gross weight of the recreational vehicle and determine the aggregate mass.
  3. Check and confirm the towing capacity of the towing vehicle and adhere to tow-bar capacity.
  4. Conduct pre-operational checks on towing and recreational vehicles.
  5. Attach the recreational vehicle to towing vehicle in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

  1. Identify obstacles or hazards and remove or avoid.
  2. Give clear directions to others in the area to avoid danger.
  3. Safely manoeuvre recreational vehicle to required location.
  4. Position recreational vehicle ensuring it is level and parallel and within reach of all required equipment.
  5. Disconnect power heads, water pipes and electrical leads and move recreational vehicle from a site.

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the ability to:

manoeuvre, tow and site multiple and diverse recreational vehicles using different towing vehicles

identify and avoid obstacles and hazards

communicate safety directions to others in the vicinity

identify and calculate weight-to-vehicle towing ratios set by state and territory authorities and manufacturers.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure use of:

off road locations where recreational vehicles are towed and sited

maps of sites

a range of towing vehicles

a range of recreational vehicles

current commercial manufacturer instructions

current schedules of weight-to-vehicle towing ratios issued by government regulators.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the individual preparing for, towing a recreational vehicle and manoeuvring it onto a site

written or oral exercises that allow assessment of the individual’s ability to:

calculate a range of weights

aggregate mass of recreational vehicles

capacities of towing vehicles

use of case studies and problem-solving exercises on obstacles and hazards and methods of solving these

written and oral questioning to assess knowledge of regulated weight-to-vehicle towing ratios

review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of the individual’s on-the-job performance.

Guidance information for assessment

The assessor should design integrated assessment activities to holistically assess this unit with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role, for example:

BSBWOR202A Organise and complete daily work activities

SITXWHS101 Participate in safe work practices.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Required skills

communication skills to discuss where the recreational vehicle will be sited and to give directions to people to avoid danger

literacy skills to:

read and interpret weight-to-vehicle towing ratios, manufacturers’ instructions and operational check information

numeracy skills to calculate weights, aggregate mass of recreational vehicles and capacities of towing vehicles

problem-solving skills to identify and avoid obstacles or hazards.

Required knowledge

details of the entire site and positions for recreational vehicles

weight-to-vehicle towing ratios set by state and territory authorities and manufacturers

pre-operational checks for the towing vehicle and the recreational vehicle

major hazards and obstacles associated with the towing and siting of recreational vehicles, and ways to address these.

Range Statement

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

The recreational vehicle may include:

camper or tent trailers

cross-country or an off road all-terrain caravans

expanda or slide out

five-wheelers

full van

pop tops

slide-on campers or campervans.

Pre-operational checks on towing vehicle and recreational vehicle may include:

brakes

fluid levels and topping up

operation of vehicle lights and indicators

tyre pressures

visual inspection.

The towing vehicle may include:

four wheel drive

specialised towing truck or unit

tractor

truck

two wheel drive

van.

Obstacles or hazards may include:

animals and objects on road

oil, rocks, mud and water on road

other vehicles, recreational vehicles and tents

pedestrians and children

steep inclines or sharp curves

trees and branches

uneven surfaces.
