Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Plan and carry out maintenance procedures on fittings and machinery

  1. Checks of vessel's fittings and machinery are organised and carried out in accordance with company maintenance schedules and manufacturer's instructions
  2. Any deterioration of a vessel's fittings and machinery is identified and appropriate maintenance action initiated or carried out within limits of responsibility of a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2
  3. Worn fittings, equipment parts, bearings and shafts are correctly identified and appropriate action initiated for repair or replacement
  4. Preventative maintenance procedures are followed to reduce corrosion on fittings and machinery in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
  5. Lubricants are applied to moving parts of vessel's fittings and machinery in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
  6. Faulty and corroded pipework is identified and reported for repair or replacement in accordance with procedures
  7. Appropriate assistance is provided to contractors carrying out maintenance work on fittings and machinery
  8. Records of maintenance work are completed in accordance with established procedures

The Evidence Guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, , the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.

1

Critical aspects of evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm appropriate knowledge and skills to:

a

Recognise and correct deteriorated fittings and machinery on a small vessel within limits of responsibility of a of a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2

b

Organise and carry out routine maintenance to minimise corrosion and deterioration of fittings and machinery on a small vessel

c

Identify typical problems related to the basic maintenance of fittings and machinery on a small vessel and take appropriate action in conjunction with crew

d

Exercise all required safety, environmental and hazard control precautions and procedures during checking and basic maintenance operations

e

Communicate effectively with others when carrying out maintenance procedures on board a small vessel

2

Evidence required for demonstration of consistent performance

a

Performance is demonstrated consistently over a period of time and in a suitable range of contexts

b

Consistently applies underpinning knowledge and skills when:

1

recognising and correcting deteriorated fittings and machinery on a small vessel

2

organising and carrying out preventative maintenance to minimise corrosion and deterioration of fittings and machinery on a small vessel

3

Evidence required for demonstration of consistent performance

(continued)

d

Action is taken promptly to report and/or rectify problems identified during checking and basic maintenance of fittings and machinery

e

Work is completed systematically with required attention to detail

f

Recognises and adapts appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions among crew and others

3

Context of assessment

a

Assessment of competency must comply with the assessment requirements of the relevant maritime regulations

b

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken within relevant marine authority approved and audited arrangements by a registered training organisation:

1

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral examinations, and

2

Appropriate practical assessment must occur:

i

at the registered training organisation; and/or

ii

on an appropriate working or training vessel

4Specific resources required for assessment

Access is required to opportunities to:

a

participate in a range of exercises, case studies and other simulated practical and knowledge assessments that demonstrate the skills and knowledge to recognise and correct deteriorated fittings and machinery and carry out basic maintenance to minimise corrosion and deterioration of fittings, pipework and machinery on a small vessel; and/or

b

carry out checks and basic maintenance on fittings and machinery on a small operational commercial or training vessel
