Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for load transfer

  1. Job hazards are identified and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  2. Working area is prepared and maintained in accordance with industry standards, codes of practice and workplace operating procedures
  3. Unsafe work practices and/or faulty equipment are reported in accordance with workplace procedures
  4. Correct personal protective equipment is identified and worn

Assess lifting requirements

  1. Work operations plan is examined and lift requirements are identified including job method and sequence, control measures and safety procedures
  2. Coordination requirements with other site personnel are confirmed
  3. Load mass, dimensions and centre of gravity are determined
  4. Appropriate lifting gear/equipment/packing, including slings, ropes, shackles, eye bolts, spreaders is selected from safety charts and safe working load (SWL)/working load limit (WLL) tags, and is assembled and checked for serviceability
  5. Damaged or worn items are tagged, rejected and reported to appropriate personnel for follow-up action
