Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for grading, sorting and marking

1.1 Review and check work order.

1.2 Identify site procedures for grading and sorting poles and debarked logs.

1.3 Locate type and quantity of poles and debarked logs to be graded, sorted and marked.

1.4 Select equipment for grading and check for operational effectiveness.

2. Grade, sort and mark poles and debarked logs

2.1 Visually assess length and diameter of poles or logs.

2.2 Review industry standards for ranges for sorting.

2.3 Identify material characteristics and defects of each pole or log against industry standards for grade type.

2.4 Measure, record and report moisture content.

2.5 Mark defects for docking.

2.6 Mark and sort material for grade classification, using markers or stickers that are easily interpretable

2.7 Record and report grading outcomes and distribution problems.

3. Distribute material

3.1 Move poles or logs to planned storage or processing operations.

3.2 Dispose of sub-standard material in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.

3.3 Monitor the movement of on-site movement of material and ensure intended flow is achieved.

3.4 Follow site procedures for labelling storage locations.
