This unit applies to staff whose duties are to operate motor vehicles used for security purposes.

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to maintain and operate security vehicles under routine conditions.

This unit replaces and is equivalent to CSCTRA002A Operate security vehicles.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Valid assessment of this unit requires:

a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered by an individual responsible for operating security vehicles effectively as part of a coordinated team, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and changes to routine

copies of legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines relating to operating security vehicles

access to appropriate learning and assessment support when required.

Method of assessment

The following assessment methods are suggested:

observation of performance in routine workplace activities within a range of agreed responsibilities and in various work locations

written and/or oral questioning to assess knowledge and understanding

completion of workplace documents and reports produced as part of routine work activities

third-party reports from experienced practitioners

completion of performance feedback from supervisors and colleagues.

Guidance information for assessment

Assessment methods should reflect workplace demands, and any identified special needs of the candidate, including language and literacy implications and cultural factors that may affect responses to the questions.

In all cases where practical assessment is used it will be combined with targeted questioning to assess the underpinning knowledge.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Required skills:

applying the organisation's policies and procedures for vehicle use and maintenance

applying manufacturer instructions for use and maintenance of vehicles and related equipment

regularly and routinely checking security vehicles and providing basic maintenance by:

identifying faults and malfunctions

reporting faults and malfunctions

driving vehicles to and from the assignment, including:

driving according to the laws and regulations

selecting and following the most direct and appropriate route

parking and appropriately securing the vehicle.

Required knowledge:

organisational requirements regarding operating security vehicles according to:

organisation's policies and procedures appropriate to the worker's role, responsibility and delegation

organisation's procedures and guidelines for operating security vehicles

organisation's reporting structures and delegations

occupational health and safety policy regarding operating security vehicles

manufacturer instructions and requirements for use and maintenance of vehicles and related equipment

transport, including:

road and traffic statutes and regulations

interpretation of road maps

understanding observation techniques relevant to use of transportation

general mechanical systems, their maintenance requirements and repairs.

Routine vehicle requirements may include checking:

fuel

oil

water

tyre pressure

registration and roadworthiness.

Organise the journey to follow the most direct route to or from the assignment chosen, having regard to traffic and road conditions. 
Select the quickest route to the scene of emergency or alarm, based on traffic and road conditions. 
Drive vehicles in a manner that minimises risk of injury to self and others at all times.
