This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide continuity services for make-up and hair in screen productions.

It applies to individuals who check the make-up and hair of performers is consistent when scenes are watched in the correct sequence, irrespective of the order in which they were shot. They are crucial in making sure there are smooth transitions between shots and scenes, thus facilitating post-production editing.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

1.1 Break down scripts to determine issues affecting hair and make-up continuity for productions

2.1 Check performers’ hair and make-up at the commencement of takes accurately reproduces their appearance at the end of previous sequential takes

2.3 Have materials for maintaining make-up and hair on hand at all times

2.4 Make required adjustments to make-up and hair quickly and safely at appropriate times during productions

2.6 Maintain accurate records of hair and make-up continuity details for performers and production personnel

2.7 Take the needs of others on set into consideration when undertaking continuity activity

3. Maintain communications during shoot

3.1 Advise relevant personnel of changes to make-up, hair and appearance

3.2 Advise cast, crew and production personnel of hair and make-up continuity issues throughout shoots in line with workplace procedures and production requirements

prepare for hair and make-up continuity activities by documenting requirements scene by scene

recognise the effect the filming process has on the appearance of make-up and hair

maintain continuity of performers’ make-up and hair quickly and efficiently throughout productions

create detailed records, including photographs, of hair and make-up continuity information for productions

work collaboratively with cast and crew during productions.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline protocols for interaction between cast and crew during film shoots

explain how the process of shooting film productions affects hair and make-up continuity operations

describe creative and technical aspects of productions relevant to the process of maintaining make-up and hair continuity

outline administrative procedures and documentation associated with maintaining hair and make-up continuity

describe safety procedures that apply to providing make-up and hair services.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

scripts for analysis

hair and make-up products and equipment

screen productions.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
