DEFCM001B
Use personal camouflage and concealment in a threat environment

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This competency was developed for Defence personnel required to use personal camouflage and concealment in a deployed threat environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.

Typically, individuals work both independently and as part of a team under direct and/or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures

This unit covers the competency required to reduce one’s personal signature in a threat environment, including:

Aural

Electronic (e.g. radio)

Olfactory

Thermal

Visual

This competency includes camouflaging oneself (and own personal equipment), concealing movement and minimising sign.

This competency is underpinned by selecting the type of camouflage required for a particular situation, and detection capabilities of the threat.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Prerequisites

Not applicable.

Employability Skills

This unit contains employability skills.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

apply appropriate camouflage and concealment techniques

minimise signature at the halt and when on the move

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to a suitable training area, simulated threat and camouflage and concealment materials.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

those which:

prevent detection or tracking by the threat

optimise personal concealment

retard the ability and/or desire for the threat to track and pursue

Type of movement may include:

leopard crawl

monkeyrun

covering latrines

inspecting for litter and dropped equipment

replacing ground litter/foliage

returning changes made to the earth (depressions, humps) to their original state

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Observation Checklist

Tasks to be observed according to workplace/college/TAFE policy and procedures, relevant legislation and Codes of Practice Yes No Comments/feedback
Environment is assessed so that appropriate camouflage and concealment techniques can be applied.
Tactical situation is assessed so that appropriate camouflage and concealment techniques can be applied.
Factors influencing camouflage and concealment are assessed.
Threat’s detection capabilities are assessed and weaknesses are identified for exploitation.
Personal camouflage is maintained.
Personal equipment is preparedandpacked appropriately.
Improvised techniques to minimise personal signature are used appropriately.
Techniques for the use of or reduction of shadow are applied.
Odours are minimised to prevent human detection, and to minimise scenttrail for trackeranimals.
Electronic signature is minimised or avoided to prevent disclosure of position.
Rations are prepared and consumed using techniques to avoid detection.
Communication is achieved through nonverbal signals.
Waste is carried with the person and/or disposed of appropriately.
Appropriate routes are selected
Type of movement selected is appropriate to the environment and tactical situation.
Silhouetting against uniform backdrops such as the sky is avoided.
Environment is continually assessed to identify the threat or their sign.
Spoor displacement is minimised.
Reaction to unexpected incidents is minimised to avoid chance of detectionminimises chances of detection.
Restareas are selected that provide optimum concealment to facilitate rest and upon leaving, are refurbished to remove evidence of stay.
