Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for fibre classing
   • Confirm clip preparation methods and classing criteria
   • Identify potential and existing work health and safety hazards, assess risks and implement control measures
   • Arrange shed layout, facilities and equipment for efficient fibre flow and pressing
   • Place clearly labelled bins and containers in line with the classing strategy, quality management system and enterprise
   • Identify and remove contaminants and sources of contaminants and dispose of in an environmentally responsible manner
   • Select, use and maintain suitable personal protective equipment
   • Establish and maintain sufficient staffing ratio
2. Class goat fibre
   • Prepare clip and check for contamination
   • Handle and skirt fleeces to the required standards
   • Check fibre to ensure freedom from contamination and stain
   • Check fibre to ensure adequate and optimum skirting
   • Class fibre according to classing criteria, industry standards, and relevant national codes of practice
   • Identify fibre of higher and lower market value and processing requirements and make lines to maximise return to the owner
3. Complete classing activities
   • Place fibre in bins in readiness for pressing
   • Identify and dry wet fibre
   • Clean work area and dispose of waste appropriately
   • Apply enterprise biosecurity policies

Performance Evidence
