Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare vision mixing documentation
   • Confirm with production personnel the quantity, nature and style of effects required for productions, and recommend creative solutions where appropriate
   • Mark actions, effects and processes on scripts or production schedules according to enterprise procedures
   • Prepare contingency plans for unscripted effects and processes that may arise during recordings in consultation with relevant personnel
   • Contribute to the creative process as required and explore potential for creating original ideas and proposals
2. Set up for vision mixing
   • Select vision mixing methods to achieve required creative and technical output
   • Negotiate alternative strategies where designated effects and processes are beyond the capability of available equipment
   • Check identified effects and processes are ready to go and monitors are working within specifications
   • Check vision sources can be accessed on the vision mixing unit and previewed on monitoring equipment
   • Note key reference points and complexities that require special attention during productions
   • Test equipment in advance and arrange for repairs or replacements as required
   • Seek advice from relevant personnel or consult reference material to resolve technical problems
3. Mix vision
   • Communicate with relevant production personnel throughout the mixing process to achieve desired effects and resolve problems
   • Preview sources throughout the production process and put to air on cue
   • Respond promptly to cues from production personnel
   • Perform transitions between vision sources and reassign sources to meet production requirements
   • Assign effects and processes to appropriate storage devices
   • Respond quickly and efficiently to equipment failure and unanticipated situations by applying alternative effects and processes
   • Monitor quality of creative and technical output during productions

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare vision mixing documentation that clearly shows when actions and effects need to be taken and includes strategies for dealing with unforeseen circumstances during productions

collaboratively explore creative approaches to vision mixing

check vision mixing equipment is functioning correctly prior to start of productions

check required actions, effects and processes are cued to facilitate smooth mixing of vision inputs

mix a range of vision inputs that meet creative and technical requirements, in collaboration with others

resolve problems with equipment and vision inputs by applying contingency plans.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of production personnel involved with vision mixing operations

list and describe typical effects and processes required for productions

briefly describe the equipment and resources available for vision mixing, including any limitation of equipment

identify typical problems that arise in context of vision mixing television productions, and briefly describe solutions.
