Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to write scripts
   • Evaluate existing narrative form in preparation for developing scripts for specified productions
   • Identify audience and purpose, and requirements for genre, structure and format
   • Evaluate script concepts and ideas, narrative and structural framework in relation to stipulated source material, as required
   • Review, discuss and obtain feedback about narratives from relevant personnel, as required
   • Establish criteria to evaluate scripts in the form they will be produced
2. Write draft scripts
   • Develop scripts using a range of appropriate script-writing tools and techniques
   • Adopt safe ergonomic practices when using screens and keyboards for long periods of time
   • Collaborate with relevant personnel to refine and redraft script to meet creative, technical and artistic requirements
   • Confirm factual accuracy based on original research and agreed existing narrative as required
   • Confirm material complies with laws and codes of practice relevant to broadcasting and publication
   • Check final draft of script meets production and performance requirements
3. Produce final scripts
   • Present draft script to production team for discussion
   • Document and incorporate feedback from relevant personnel
   • Evaluate draft scripts against established criteria
   • Make final adjustments to scripts and submit to relevant personnel by agreed deadlines

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

use a range of script-writing tools and techniques to develop scripts for creative productions or projects by agreed deadlines

check and confirm accuracy of information and compliance with legislative requirements

seek and incorporate feedback from other production team members to ensure scripts meet creative, technical and artistic requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the storytelling techniques and writing conventions that are applied in a range of screen, media, performance and text contexts

describe the script-writing narrative, structure and formats appropriate to genre and production methods

describe codes of practice and relevant aspects of laws on defamation, vilification, breaches of privacy and court reporting to be considered when writing scripts

identify copyright and intellectual property requirements as they relate to developing scripts for creative productions or projects

outline health and safety requirements as they relate to working for periods of time on screens and keyboards

describe typical challenges that arise when writing scripts and explain ways to resolve them

describe criteria which may be used to evaluate scripts.
