- Prepare for coppice management
- Develop coppice stems
- Establish and maintain communication with others to ensure a safe work environment.
- Assess environmental conditions and respond to them when planning the coppice development of each tree stump.
- Direct chainsaw operators to cut tree stumps at ground level to form stools.
- Clear stools of debris and allow to rest and sprout coppice.
- Protect coupe from wildlife and grazing animals during coppice development.
- Remove or leave standard seedlings in line with the coppice management plan
- Assess stools regularly to measure and gauge the amount of coppice growth.
- Undertake thinning
- Assess coppice stems to identify stronger stems and determine how many stems to leave.
- Remove weaker or smaller coppice stems by hand or mechanically.
- Undertake thinning regularly to control regrowth and promote the growth of retained coppice stems.
- Direct and prepare harvesting activities to thin more mature coppice forests.
- Recycle debris in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.
- Record and report coppice management activities to the appropriate personnel.
