Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare for production of veneer.
  2. Produce decorative veneer and dispose of sub-standard material
  3. Regrade and redistribute veneer, clean up and maintain records.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

set up the work area in preparation for producing decorative veneers

produce decorative veneers in line with safe work procedure and while controlling risk in the work area

visually inspect veneers for defects and characteristics to determine grading status

regrade, label and redistribute veneers on-site using designated equipment

clean equipment according to safe work procedure (includes performing lock-out procedure)

dispose of production and cleaning waste according to site procedures and environment requirements

record production, quality and fault information using workplace record keeping procedure.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

site standards, industry standards, workplace requirements, policies and safe work procedures relevant to the production of decorative veneers

emergency response procedures (fire, accident and serious equipment malfunction) relevant to own role and responsibility

environmental management requirements, including guidelines for waste minimisation, recycling, re-use and the safe disposal of waste material from production and cleaning

hazards and risks associated with the production of decorative veneers and appropriate risk controls as referred to the in the range of conditions

procedures for visually assessing and selecting decorative veneer based on the following characteristics: species, colour, type, width, length, thickness and defects (warp, wane, cupping, shakes, insect defects, knots, resin pockets)

types of decorative veneers: growth ring, ray, ribbon, wavy, curly, fiddle-back, crotch, swirl, birds eye, burl, burr, butt or stump

types of production techniques: book matching, end matching, four piece butt matching, diamond matching, herring-bone matching, segmental matching, slip drawn matching

types of panel products including medium density fibreboard, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood.

product distribution procedures

workplace specific storage systems and product grading and labelling procedures

established communication channels and protocols

procedures for monitoring production and identifying and resolving problems during the decorative veneer production process, to maintain production flow

procedures for the safe operation and cleaning of equipment

procedures for recording and reporting production, quality and fault information (manual or computer-based).
