Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Monitor throughput
   • Machine is stepped to ensure scores and folds are in correct position and paper tension is correct
   • Guide positions are monitored and adjusted if necessary to ensure adhesive is applied evenly and in the correct position
   • Multi-walls adhere correctly and without creasing
   • Paper moisture is monitored and correct moisture levels are maintained
   • Perforation occurs to the correct depth and in the right place
   • Creasing units and folding units work in the correct location
   • Folds and guillotine cuts are correctly placed
   • Glues dry at correct rates for in-line processes
   • All units run at the speed required by enterprise quality standards
2. Confirm quality of output
   • Sample from the machine is selected and checked to ensure it conforms to required quality standards
   • Adjustments are made when standards are not met
   • Each in-line process is monitored and minor adjustments are made during production, if required
   • Samples are continuously monitored for defects, and defects are removed
   • Efficiency, quality and output rate of the production run are monitored for problems, and any deficiencies resolved
   • Wastage is monitored, kept to a minimum and correctly disposed of according to enterprise quality standards
3. Rectify quality of output
   • Faults which affect quality of sacks or bags are identified and rectified
   • Problems that reduce output rate are identified and fixed
   • Faults that affect efficient operation of equipment are identified and resolved

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

run and monitor in-line tube making machines to job pecifications and enterprise quality standards for the manufacture of sacks or bags

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify common faults associated with in-line tubing machines, and explain their causes and how to correct

explain different types of adhesive and their drying time

explain the procedure for quality checks

identify enterprise documentation procedures, enterprise quality standards and enterprise faults procedures relevant to this task, where they are kept, and the information included in them.
