Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Set up electronic monitoring system
  2. Run job and monitor production
  3. Review production data

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

correctly set up and use electronic monitoring systems for glue lines, gatherers and folders for TWO different jobs (preferably of different sizes and substrates), according to manufacturer’s and job specifications, enterprise procedures and listed performance criteria

demonstrate an ability to retrieve information from the electronic system.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain work health and safety factors for setting up and operating electronic monitoring systems

explain importance of distance between cartons on the machine for production and for the operation of the electronic monitoring system, as well as checking the ejector (or marker) for correct operation

explain different carton types and substrates, and the effect on the amount and position of glue required for different carton types

describe the result of too much or too little glue, and explain the correction process

describe the result of an incorrectly positioned glue line and explain the process to adjust the position with respect to the length of the glue flap

determine what machine faults are registered on the EMS

list parts of the folding/gluing system that cause the monitoring system to reject product

list ways of ensuring the EMS is ejecting/marking only faulty cartons

identify parts of the machine to adjust if reject cartons are not correctly identified and culled

list faults likely to trigger the signature or sheet monitoring system

identify the cause of common faults and how can they be avoided and corrected

explain quality principles behind the use of electronic monitoring

explain work procedures to implement to minimise faults

identify production records to be kept or written up, and the information to be included

list steps to ensure important features of the EMS are followed

identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and the information included in them.
