Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare work
   • Conduct risk assessment for environmental safety.
   • Determine work requirements and work site from specifications or instructions.
   • Prepare work plans using relevant plans, drawings, standards and technical data according to job and safety requirements.
   • Select and use electrical safety equipment.
   • Check coordination issues, including permission to access third-party sites, isolations and permits to work with relevant personnel.
   • Identify, check and prepare materials, equipment and resources required to satisfy job plan.
   • Identify basic metering equipment and recognise specifications for operation.
   • Select safety equipment and fit and use personal protective equipment.
   • Identify yourself to customers and organise arrangements to complete repairs.
2. Read metering equipment
   • Report readings outside normal parameters and faulty meters and apply organisational procedures for estimating consumption.
   • Collect and report information on the performance of the metering equipment.
3. Install flow control and metering devices
   • Apply electrical safety equipment.
   • Isolate water flow.
   • Install meter or meter replacement.
   • Restore water flow and check for leaks and meter operation.
   • Remove electrical safety equipment and restore site.
4. Maintain flow control and metering devices
   • Carry out routine inspections of flow control and metering facilities in water distribution or wastewater collection systems.
   • Carry out preventative maintenance and service of equipment and facilities.
5. Finalise work and complete documentation
   • Check, tag and report faulty equipment and tools.
   • Store equipment, tools and materials.
   • Restore work site.
   • Maintain compliance reports and workplace records.
   • Record and report activities.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

identifying and responding to operational problems

conducting risk assessment

using electrical safety procedures

using personal protective equipment

producing reports and logs

performing basic calculations to install and test equipment

installing flow control and metering devices

planning and preparing for installation of flow control and metering devices

interpreting plans, specifications and instructions for installation of flow control and metering devices

conducting routine inspections, maintenance and servicing of basic metering, flow control and regulating devices

completing workplace documentation

installing, replacing and securing basic volumetric metering equipment for domestic, industrial and commercial premises
