Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to load aggregate using a purpose built loader
   • Access, interpret and apply aggregate loading documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Prepare loader for operation
   • Conduct pre-operational checks
   • Check type and quantity of pre-coat in tank and adjust to required level
   • Check pre-coating requirements and select correct loader size
   • Record material quantities and screen sizes
   • Select screens appropriate to the aggregate size
3. Manage stack site
   • Identify and record aggregate sizes
   • Check ground conditions at stack site to minimise contamination
   • Estimate and record quantities in aggregate stockpiles
   • Identify suitable parking availability and reserve for trucks while waiting and loading
   • Keep stack site free from contamination by pre-coat material
4. Load/screen/pre-coat aggregate
   • Direct trucks into position to minimise dust to workers and contamination of aggregates in windy conditions
   • Drive and operate equipment
   • Load appropriate aggregate quantities into trucks without contamination
   • Apply pre-coating uniformly to aggregate at specified rate
   • Load aggregate quantities accurately and complete records
5. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Carry out housekeeping requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient loading of aggregate using a purpose built loader including:

organise work activities

select and use relevant tools and equipment safely

identify and report on hazards related to the worksite and work activity

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the loading of aggregate using a purpose built loader that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of loading aggregate using a purpose built loader that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

a minimum of four (4) truckloads of aggregate from two (2) separate stock piles loaded, screened and pre-coated to job specifications

a minimum of four (4) truckloads of aggregate from two separate stock piles loaded and screened to job specifications

cleaning up of site in accordance with operational requirements

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in loading aggregate using a purpose built loader through:

applying legislative, organisational and site requirements and procedures for:

site and equipment safety requirements

aggregate loading

dust control

housekeeping

equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

understanding aggregate types, characteristics and uses

understanding aggregate screening and pre-coating procedures

understanding silica, its properties and dangers

understanding the operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

complying with the site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

understanding the processes for the calculation of material quantities

safety data sheets

preparing and/or implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements
