Issue Date: April 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency DEFCA213 - Supervise the destruction of hostile air targets using line of sight ground based AD weapon system
Description This unit covers the competency required to supervise and control all aspects of the operation of a direct fire ground based missile system designed to destroy hostile aircraft. The control of the ground based missile system requires target interrogation, analysis, engagement and decisionmaking based on tactical information, situational awareness and observed target activity. This unit of competency is written for visual range ground based air defence weapon systems, which does not include small arms. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This competency was developed for combat arms personnel required to supervise and control all aspects of the operation of a direct fire ground based missile system designed to destroy hostile aircraft in a deployed operational environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work. While this work will be undertaken under the commander’s direction the individual must be able to act independently as required by the circumstances, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to recognise own level of authority; to correctly identify a number of different types of aerial targets as determined by the Combat Arms Training Centre; to prioritise targets in a high intensity situation encountered in a threat environment; to direct fire in a clear and concise manner, and to take appropriate action in the event of misfire and cancel missile inflight; and to supervise the deployment and maintenance of ground based air defence systems.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in a simulated operational environment due to the high cost of ammunition.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to a hifidelity simulator that accurately simulates the threat environment.
