Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to produce basic adhesive, mechanical or thermal fastened product. Some equipment may also involve cutting, trimming, folding and/or gathering (collating) which may be assessed at the same time.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit requires the individual to monitor and adjust machinery, maintain transportation of the substrate, identify and rectify faults, and correctly clean and shut down equipment.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Element: Maintain reel transportation system (OR Element 2)
  • Reel stand is monitored and adjusted to ensure efficient continuous operation
  • Web control system is monitored and adjusted to ensure correct tension and accurate continuous positioning of the web for efficient operation

Element: Maintain sheet transportation system (OR Element 1)
  • Feeder and delivery systems are monitored and adjusted to ensure continuous and efficient feeding to machine

Element: Maintain basic adhesive/mechanical/ thermal fastening process
  • Registration of fastening is monitored and adjusted to ensure quality of product meets the standard of the approved sample
  • Wire straightness, length, cut-off and clinching pressures are monitored and adjusted to ensure quality of product meets the standard of the approved sample OR
  • Adhesion is monitored and adjusted to ensure quality of product meets the standard of the approved sample OR
  • Power current and dwell time is monitored and adjusted to ensure quality of product meets the standard of the approved sample adjusted according to job specifications
       
Element: Maintain production process
  • Basic in-line printing/converting/binding/finishing process(es) are monitored and adjusted to ensure the quality of product meets the standard of the approved sample
  • Production process is operated in association with fellow workers and according to enterprise procedures and planned daily schedule
  • Production is maintained according to OHS requirements, manufacturer's specifications and enterprise procedures
  • Manual and/or automatic control is used according to job specifications
  • Performance is monitored and verified using the process control system according to enterprise procedures
  • Production difficulties are anticipated and preventive action is taken to prevent occurrence by timely intervention
  • Process adjustments to eliminate problems are reported according to enterprise procedures
  • Waste is sorted according to enterprise procedures
       
Element: Identify and rectify problems and faults
  • Problems in adhesive/mechanical/thermal fastening machine are identified and reported according to enterprise procedures
  • Adjustments or corrections are carried out according to specified procedures and are consistent with operator's skill level
  • Adhesive/mechanical/thermal fastening machine operation is checked to ensure correct operation
  • Faulty performance of equipment is identified and reported according to enterprise procedures
  • Machine faults requiring repair are identified and reported to designated person according to enterprise procedures

On TWO occasions produce adhesive OR mechanical OR thermal fastened products, using different weights and sizes of substrate, according to manufacturer's and job specifications, enterprise procedures and the listed Performance Criteria

Demonstrate use of computerised control, monitoring and data entry systems if available and appropriate.

Assessment must ensure:

Assessment may take place on the job, off the job or a combination of these

Assessment off the job must be undertaken in a closely simulated workplace environment.

Method of assessment
