Direct television programs and segments


Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to direct television programs and segments that have a clearly defined format.

It applies to individuals responsible for directing crew, program guests, interviewees or members of the public being filmed for programs. They are members of a production team, and report to an executive producer, news editor or program producer.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Undertake preproduction

1.1 Determine program format, location and requirements in consultation with relevant personnel

1.2 Decide approach to achieve creative and technical aspects of programs and program segments

1.3 Devise single-camera or multi-camera coverage in consultation with relevant personnel and within own level of responsibility

1.4 Confirm all program elements are listed on running sheets in line with enterprise procedures

2. Direct program segments

2.1 Oversee camera and sound check and rehearsal of shots

2.2 Check safety and security procedures are being followed

2.3 Provide final briefings to talent and crew and respond to queries as required

2.4 Direct talent and crew to achieve required style in a way that minimises need for editing

2.5 Review recorded segments to determine if they meet production requirements and re-shoot as required

2.6 Direct editing of segments as required, in line with production requirements and deadlines

3. Direct programs

3.1 Oversee camera and sound check and rehearsal of shots

3.2 Provide final briefings to talent and crew, and respond to queries as required

3.3 Direct cameras and operations to achieve required style

3.4 Direct live switches as required

3.5 Take decisive action in the event of unforeseen circumstances during live programs

3.6 Communicate with crew and program guests in ways that respect their cultural and personal circumstances

3.7 Monitor and control pace and flow of programs

4. Review programs

4.1 Debrief with relevant personnel about how well programs achieved creative and technical goals

4.2 Incorporate suggestions for improvement into planning for future programs

4.3 Finalise requisite documentation and ensure required copies of programs are stored in accordance with legislative and enterprise procedures

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

consult with production personnel about the best way to achieve requirements for programs and program segments

check arrangements and equipment are in place prior to filming of television programs and segments

brief and direct talent and crew during filming of television programs and segments

manage a number of tasks concurrently during filming

respond to unforeseen circumstances during live programs

meet production criteria and deadlines

produce and manage circulation of workplace documentation.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in television production

identify typical problems of directing television programs and briefly describe solutions

explain single and multi-camera techniques for making programs that require minimal editing

describe key features of sound and editing equipment used to produce television segments and programs

outline ways television directors communicate with production personnel and talent as programs are being recorded

describe work health and safety procedures that apply to television production.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

television production facilities

production and front-of-camera personnel

programs and program segments that need directing.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
