Operate vision systems

Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to operate a range of standard vision system equipment during live productions or events.

At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Participate in technical run-throughs

1.1 In consultation with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation, confirm technical and production requirements for vision systems

1.2 Plot and run through cues on direction and according to equipment, sequencing, timing and speed requirements

1.3 Identify problems and modify equipment as required to ensure smooth operation during live productions or events

1.4 Change cues and modify running sheets and other documentation as required

2. Undertake vision system operations

2.1 Check functionality of communications equipment

2.2 Power up and conduct a check on all primary and backup equipment and accessories to ensure working order

2.3 Deliver required vision effects by executing on cue all vision system operations

2.4 Modify cues, as required, to cater for unexpected contingencies

2.5 Respond to equipment malfunctions by rectifying faults safely and efficiently and inform relevant personnel as required

2.6 Use backup systems as required

3. Complete vision system operations

3.1 Safely power down equipment according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures

3.2 Secure vision systems to avoid damage when unattended

3.3 Use safe lifting techniques when carrying and packing vision system equipment and accessories

3.4 Prepare vision system equipment for transport as required

3.5 Leave the work site in the original or improved condition

3.6 Complete and distribute workplace documentation as required

3.7 Seek feedback on own work performance and adjust work practices accordingly

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

operate industry-standard vision system equipment during at least two live productions or events

interpret and use vision system running sheets during at least two live productions or events

meet work deadlines

follow safety procedures

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe key operational features, capacities and limitations of a range of vision system equipment

explain how the production areas of staging, lighting and sound are used in conjunction with vision systems

describe issues and challenges that typically arise when operating vision systems and suggest solutions to address them

describe the role and responsibilities of vision system technicians during live productions or events

describe how the following work health and safety issues apply to operating vision systems:

licensing requirements for persons performing high risk work and entering building sites

safe manual-handling techniques

rigging procedures

working safely with electricity and hazardous substances.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

vision system cue sheets

standard vision system equipment

a venue where vision systems can be operated.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
