Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to assess trees and apply treatments to ensure the health of a stand of trees. The unit includes reviewing and evaluating program processes against defined criteria

The unit applies to job roles including Arboriculture Supervisor, Farm Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Operations Supervisor, Harvesting Supervisor, Harvesting Team Leader, Propagation and Stand Health Supervisor and Tree Farm Supervisor.

1. Plan stand health program

1.1 Review stand health requirements and site environmental protection measures and regulations.

1.2 Obtain and assess information that will impact on stand health planning.

1.3 Identify and select methods for encouraging stand health.

1.4 Develop and document measurable performance indicators, specifications and targets for stand health.

1.5 Obtain required approvals from authorities

1.6 Document and communicate stand health program.

2. Implement and monitor stand health program

2.1 Coordinate resources for stand health program.

2.2 Maintain clear and accurate documentation on stand health.

2.3 Develop and communicate work schedule for the site.

2.4 Implement and monitor stand health program ensuring health and protection of stand.

2.5 Conduct systematic checks for compliance requirements.

3. Review stand health program

3.1 Assess and evaluate information on stand health operation and confirm that techniques, methodologies and budgets are consistent with the program.

3.2 Document issues and impediments to stand health.

3.3 Undertake cost benefit analysis and make recommendations for change or improvement.

3.4 Disseminate results of review of stand health program.

3.5 Follow organisational procedures for completion of all documentation on stand health program.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. that WHS procedures, practices, policies and precautions are observed and followed

that site environmental requirements and relevant commonwealth, state or territory, and local legislation and regulations are followed

that performance indicators, targets and specifications are met

that quantity, cost and provenance information is collected in line with plan specifications

that required organisational documentation is completed clearly and accurately

procedures for identifying and evaluating structural defects in trees

methods to identify pests, diseases and physiological damage to trees

methods to manage tree pests and diseases

methods for analysing the nutritional status of trees

methods of collecting and storing specimens for identification

methods to improve stand health including

application of fertilisers

application of pesticides and herbicides

pruning techniques

competition management techniques

browsing control techniques

consideration of environmental sustainability issues

environmental protection requirements for the site or setting

relevant approvals including where:

the use of chemicals or biological agents is intended

browsing control techniques that may impact on neighbouring properties

consideration of environmental sustainability issues apply

WHS policies and procedures

budgets and planning tools


Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

relevant policies and procedures for the management of stand health

a stand of trees and the relevant health requirements

PPE suitable for managing stand health

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
