Follow procedures for routine safe removal of patient


Application

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to ensure safe removal of the patient under routine conditions as part of emergency work where patients are not anticipated to have an immediate life threatening injury, illness or condition.

This unit applies to pre-hospital/out-of-hospital health care workers.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Assess non-emergency situation in relation to safe removal of the patient

1.1 Survey scene and assess condition of patient in relation to procedures necessary for safe removal of patient

1.2 Formulate plan based on assessment of all factors and with patient’s condition and welfare as the prime concerns

1.3 Identify additional resources for safe removal of patient, as required, based on assessment of the situation

2. Implement procedures for safe removal of the patient

2.1 Obtain any resources necessary for the safe removal of the patient

2.2 Implement plan to ensure safety of patient and workers’ welfare

2.3 Negotiate with colleagues and patient to maintain safe movement of the patient according to relevant Commonwealth legislation and State/Territory legislation, including for work health and safety

2.4 Ensure actions are performed and documented according to established clinical guidelines/protocols

3. Monitor removal procedure

3.1 Constantly monitor removal procedure with reference to needs, condition and safety of the patient and workers

3.2 Communicate with patient and monitor their welfare and any other factors impacting the safe movement of the patient

3.3 Evaluate and modify removal procedure as necessary to ensure ongoing safety of patient and workers

Evidence of Performance

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• performed 2 routine extrications of a patient including:

- analysing and making decisions that ensured patient welfare

- conducting risk assessment and identifying hazards

- applying the correct and safe lifting and manual handling techniques

- using available resources and various types of appropriate equipment

• used interpersonal skills while working with other workers and patient during safe egress.


Evidence of Knowledge

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• workplace health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures relevant to the movement of patients

• patient care requirements under a range of circumstances involving movement of patient

• correct use of relevant equipment

• potential for adaptation of available resources

• factors that may affect safety and welfare of patient and crew.


Assessment Conditions

Skills and knowledge must be demonstrated in a workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions. Where simulation is used, it must reflect real working conditions by modelling industry operating conditions and contingencies, as well as using suitable facilities, equipment and resources.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
