Establish a business case for sustainability and competitive advantage in ICT projects

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to seek business advantages by developing innovative and sustainable solutions in information and communications technology (ICT) project plans.

It applies to individuals who prepare planning, cost-benefit analysis and return on investment for the implementation of sustainable schemes at the enterprise level and who work with high-level specialist training skills and knowledge in optical telecommunications and IT networks using internet protocol (IP) systems.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare information for establishing a business case

1.1 Evaluate proposed ICT project to determine scope and potential of sustainability integration

1.2 Research appropriate sources of information relevant to project to prepare business case

1.3 Analyse and evaluate expected goals of project and relate business case to broader organisational goals

1.4 Identify and consult with stakeholders to plan and validate options

1.5 Identify and report on any assumptions and known constraints that can impact on project

2. Produce business case for ICT sustainability project

2.1 Evaluate critical success factors to determine vital strategy for project to successfully implement sustainability and gain competitive advantage

2.2 Prepare cost-benefit analysis and estimate overall benefit obtained by introducing or improving sustainability in project

2.3 Prepare estimate of costs over appropriate time period and determine potential of return on investment (RoI)

2.4 Evaluate and analyse alternative options to determine benefits, disadvantages, costs and risks

3. Produce business case documentation

3.1 Validate options with stakeholders and determine recommended option

3.2 Prepare implementation plan for recommended option for ICT project

3.3 Produce executive summary of proposal, including consequences of not implementing sustainability activity

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

demonstrate a measurable improvement of a business through the implementation of a chosen strategy using benchmark indicators

communicate effectively with stakeholders on approaches to sustainability improvements, development and implementation, and contribute to resolution of disputes among stakeholders

use software systems for recording and filing documentation, measuring current usage, and interpreting all visual data and information

identify improvements and benchmarks against industry best practice by continuously reviewing and improving policies over time.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

summarise best practice approaches relevant to sustainability

discuss environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of practice applicable to the industry and organisation

describe equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles and work health and safety (WHS) implications of policy being developed

explain policy development processes and practices

outline principles, practices and available tools and techniques of sustainability management relevant to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry

elucidate quality assurance systems relevant to own organisation

discuss relevant industry competency

evaluate relevant organisational policies, procedures and protocols as they relate to sustainability

summarise relevant systems and procedures to aid in the achievement of workplace sustainability

explain how to calculate ICT power consumption

discuss energy consumption and energy audit methodology

summarise the environmental impacts of products, processes, systems and services.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the telecommunications – sustainability field of work and include access to:

sites on which preparation of a business case for introducing or improving sustainability in an ICT project may be carried out

relevant legislation, standards, guidelines, reports, and equipment specifications and drawings

a range of workplace documentation and personnel information and resources, such as compliance obligations, organisational plans and work responsibilities.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
